Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you? (Author: Gwen Bell)

If I were to sum up 2010 with a single word…it would have to be satya.  Satya, or Truth, is one of the niyamas, or observances,  in the eight fold path of yoga as set forth in Patanjali’s Sutras.

It is also the namesake and inspiration of this blog, A Satya Life.

I took a personal vow of satya this year during my initiation as a yoga instructor and it has changed my life. Or perhaps I should say it has changed me.

Thanks to my (loving) practice and dedication to satya (because one should always be grounded in love before speaking the truth), I have been able to embrace a fearlessness I did not know I was capeable of.  Satya has allowed me to tell friends openly and honestly what I adore about them, and to tell friends when they have hurt me.  It allowed me to tell a man who wanted to marry me that I did not love him, and tell another man who had left my life that I was still hurting from his abrupt departure.  It allowed me to ask my job for a raise.  And to ask my friends for forgiveness.

The interesting thing that I learned is that this simple practice of speaking my truth has actually made it easier to be myself… and perhaps that is the reason I’m so hooked.

So Satya is my word for 2010.  And let me tell you…

…it sure makes life juicy.
